Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the determinants of export intensity among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in India, shedding light on the complex interplay of factors that influence their engagement in international trade. As India undergoes economic transformations, the role of SMEs in the global market becomes increasingly significant. Utilizing a multi-dimensional analytical framework, this study explores the key drivers and barriers affecting export intensity, examining both internal and external factors. The research draws on a diverse dataset collected from a representative sample of Indian SMEs, incorporating quantitative measures and qualitative insights. Employing advanced statistical methods, the study unveils the nuanced relationships between variables such as firm size, innovation, market orientation, regulatory environment, and internationalization strategies. By delving into the unique challenges faced by Indian SMEs, the paper aims to provide practical insights for policymakers, business leaders, and researchers seeking to enhance the export capabilities of these enterprises. Findings reveal that while certain factors, such as technological innovation and proactive market orientation, positively impact export intensity, challenges such as regulatory complexities and resource constraints pose significant hurdles. The paper contributes not only to the academic discourse on international business but also offers actionable recommendations for policymakers to formulate targeted strategies supporting SMEs in navigating the global marketplace. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics shaping the export landscape for Indian SMEs and provides a foundation for future studies on fostering their global competitiveness.
